Missile Man Of Indian-Former President APJ Abdul Kalam Dies At 83

“Real life ray for world”

Former President of India APJ Abdul Kalam died in Shillong on Monday evening of a suspected cardiac arrest. He collapsed during a lecture at the Indian Institute of Management and was rushed to Bethany hospital around 7 pm. He was declared dead after all efforts to revive him.

The 11th president of India had gone to teach at the youngest of the IIMs where he was part of the visiting faculty.

“He was brought into hospital without a pulse or BP. There was no sign of life,” said Dr John Sailo, Bethany hospital’s CEO to The Quint.

‘Missile Man Of India’

Dr. Kalam came from an extremely modest family background in Tamil Nadu and sold newspapers as a boy to supplement his father’s income. He graduated in physics and went on to study aerospace engineering at Madras Institute of Technology, where he worked as a scientist in Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) for almost a decade before moving to the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). There he became the project director of India’s first indigenous Satellite Launch Vehicle and went on to be deeply involved in almost major scientific advance that India made in the space and nuclear sectors.

Kalam was the Chief Scientific Adviser to the Prime Minister and the Secretary of the Defence Research and Development Organisation from July 1992 to December 1999. The Pokhran-II nuclear tests were conducted during this period in which he played a critical role and became India’s best-known nuclear scientist.

In 1997, he received the Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian honour for his contribution to scientific research in India. Five years later, he became the 11th President of India in 2002, and was affectionately known as the ‘People’s President’.

Kalam was very popular with children and young people and he reciprocated in equal measure at every opportunity. He travelled and lectured tirelessly, devoting his life to propagating ideas for a better India. He also evangelised the virtues of hardwork, dedication and perseverance among young people, using stories from his own inspirational life as anecdotes. He remained an extremely popular speaker despite his advancing years. His session at the Jaipur Literature Festival this year was the most popular session, as the entire festival venue was taken over by those who had come to listen to him.

He had over 40 honorary doctorates from countries across the world. He published over a dozen books, and at least six biographies have been written about him. He remained a bachelor all his life.

Union Home Secretary L C Goyal has said that the government will observe 7 days of mourning.

Today is a good day for freedom of speech on Internet like twitter, Facebook, Google+ etc in India. Supreme Court gives a direction on the ambiguous law 66A IT ACT that could be used to imprison citizens for content that they post online.

“The division bench said the public’s right to know is directly affected by Section 66A of Information Technology Act. The apex court also said Section 66A of IT Act clearly affects Right to Freedom of Speech and Expression enshrined under the Constitution.

SC, however, refused to strike down two other provisions of the IT Act that provide blocking of sites.

The Court said there is a difference between discussion, advocacy and incitement. Discussion & advocacy, no matter how annoying, is allowed said the division bench in it’s judgment. Court while delivering the verdict said liberty and liberty of thought is of paramount importance in a country like India.”

Review Of Delhi Public Transport System

Delhi Trans Port Services

Delhi:- Delhi’s potential for redevelopment in the urban core is limited by the presence of the federal government and its associated buildings, institutions and services. Delhi’s more advanced highway infrastructure and higher rates of automobile ownership have generated substantially more sprawl than in many other Indian cities. Delhi’s BRT system is relatively new, currently operating only a 5.8 kilometer corridor from the Munchen Hospital to the Mool Chand Flyover. No exclusive BRT lanes are provided. Lane marking is used instead of physical barriers, and BRT buses operate in middle lanes. Fare collection is handled on board. Local buses have been rerouted to feed metro rail stations rather than compete against the operationally self-sustaining DMRC. About 20% of DMRC’s annual revenue is unrelated to fares. Real-time next-train arrival information is provided at stations as a customer amenity, and tap-and-go smart “tokens” are used for single journeys. It also has Bicycle sharing program.

The governments are pushing for greater use of public transport and non-motorized modes. Central government (India) has initiated program to help cities have better transport facilities. Urban transport is also proved to be better for urban planning. Governments are taking steps to support environmental friendly transport system and keeping check on old vehicles producing large amount of pollution. It is giving cheap loans for CNG auto-rickshaw to meet the cities ever increasing demand for transport.

Major findings

Pressure to reduce the air pollution Delhi has taken steps to use environmental friendly fuel vehicles. DTC operates world’s largest fleet of CNG buses. Due to larger ridership the state of maintenance is not in good condition. It is also pushing for creating a culture of using public transport, adopting proven best practices, aggressive use of public-private partnership and implementation of technology based fare collection system. One of the main agenda on transport department list is to provide quality service.

Even though introducing new transport system in the city problem of overcrowding could not be dealt properly. Aggressive steps are taken to introduce environmental friendly vehicles and fuel but then also air quality has not improved much. Proper steps are not taken to discourage new registration of private vehicles. Delhi’s bicycle sharing program is a disaster.
